    FAQs

Honorary Doctorate is a degree given by a college or university to someone who is not a student but who has done something important.

An honorary degree acknowledges someone who a university committee deems worth honouring, by offering them a special (albeit mostly symbolic) position, in the university community. A degree that is awarded honoris causa (because Latin boosts snootiness) has never conferred the right to use the degree.

An honorary degree may be awarded to an outstanding individual who satisfies one or more of the following criteria: Eminence, in the course of a career, in some field of scholarship, in public service, or in an artistic, literary, governmental, religious, financial, or other endeavours.

Both the recipient and honoring institution can reap benefits from an honorary degree being awarded. For instance, the individual being honored can use the title list it on her résumé and curriculum vitae, while the institution enjoys the benefit of associating itself with a notable person.

By convention, recipients of honorary doctorates do not use the title “Dr” in general correspondence, although in formal correspondence from the university issuing the honorary degree it is normal to address the recipient by the title.

Yes, it is fully legal through out the world. It can be even apostilled as any regular degree (Attested by a notary public appointed by an government).

An honorary doctorate can bring recognition to its holder in the public sphere, and is an asset in finding a job in the recipient’s field. However, most honorary degree recipients already enjoy enough public recognition that the degree merely emphasizes the qualifications they already have.

Outside the academic setting, the appropriate language is “honorary degree” or “honorary doctorate.” It is recommended that in a curriculum vitae or resume the honorary degree be listed under “honors and awards” and not under “education.”

Universities have the power to confer honorary degrees for which proposals have to be approved by their academic and executive councils before final approval is granted by Chancellors and Visitors.

A PhD is an academic degree focused on original research, data analysis, and the evaluation of theory. A professional doctorate focuses on applying research to practical problems, formulating solutions to complex issues, and designing effective professional practices within your field.

The person receiving the title of “honorary doctorate” can use the abbreviation “Dr. hc”. If you already have an academic doctorate degree, you can use the abbreviation “Dr.
